Varus Thrust Gait

Do your knees look bowed when you walk? Or does your knee shift outward when you step?

This is often called Varus Thrust Gait, commonly seen in medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.
Recently I treated a 65-year-old active gentleman with a desk job who had:

  • Bowing of the knee (genu varum)
  • Pain on the inner side of the knee
  • Knee shifting outward during walking
  • Difficulty with long walks and stairs

Why this happens

With medial knee OA, the inner knee joint wears down first. This causes more pressure on the inside of the knee, leading to bowing and unstable walking.
One solution we used
The GenuTrain OA brace (Bauerfeind).
This specialized brace helps by:

✔️ Reducing pressure on the inner knee joint

✔️ Correcting alignment during walking

✔️ Controlling varus thrust gait

✔️ Allowing patients to stay active and delay surgery

The BOA dial system allows controlled off-loading of the painful side of the knee.
Important
A brace works best when combined with physiotherapy and strengthening to improve knee mechanics.
At Get Back Physiotherapy, treatment focuses on:

  • Manual therapy
  • Knee alignment correction
  • Hip and glute strengthening
  • Gait correction
  • Advanced orthopedic bracing when needed

📍 If knee arthritis is limiting your walking, we can help you stay active.
