Alberta PNP Immigration Pathways

The Alberta PNP Program accepts applications under four main pathways:

Alberta Opportunity Pathway

Introduced in June 2018, the Alberta Opportunity Pathway replaced earlier employer-driven streams. Its purpose is to simplify processing and provide equal access for qualified workers and Alberta employers.

Work Status and Residency

Applicants must hold a valid temporary resident status in Canada and authorisation to work. Eligible work permits include:

• LMIA-based work permits
• LMIA-exempt permits under international agreements or mobility programs
• Post-Graduation Work Permits

Applicants must also be working in an eligible occupation within Alberta.

Individuals in removal proceedings, implied status, or working outside Alberta are not eligible.

Occupation Criteria

Most occupations under National Occupational Classification (NOC) levels 0, A, B, C, and D are eligible, except those listed as ineligible by Alberta. Unlike some provinces, Alberta does not rely on a fixed occupation demand list.

Language Requirements

Applicants must submit valid language test results at the time of application.

• Minimum CLB/NCLC 4 for most occupations
• CLB/NCLC 5 for NOC 0, A, and B positions
• CLB/NCLC 7 for Nurse Aides, Orderlies, and Patient Service Associates (NOC 3413)

Education Requirements

Applicants must have completed at least a high school education that meets Alberta standards. This applies to both domestic and foreign education credentials.

Work Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following:

• 12 months of full-time work in Alberta within the last 18 months
• 24 months of full-time work in Canada or abroad within the last 30 months

Post-Graduation Work Permit holders must also demonstrate employment related to their field of study from an approved Alberta institution.

Employment Conditions

Applicants must:

• Work full-time (minimum 30 hours per week)
• Hold the required licensing or certification for the occupation.
• Have a valid job offer from an Alberta employer.
• Be employed in the same occupation as listed in the application.

Alberta Express Entry Pathway

Under this pathway, Alberta selects candidates directly from the federal Express Entry pool by issuing a Notification of Interest (NOI).

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must:

• Have an active Express Entry profile
• Show intent to settle permanently in Alberta.
• Work in an occupation that supports Alberta’s economic priorities.
• Have a minimum CRS score of 300

Factors That Improve Selection Chances

• Alberta job offer or prior work experience
• Canadian post-secondary education
• Immediate family members residing in Alberta

Factors That Reduce Selection Chances

• Express Entry profile expiring within 90 days
• Employment in an ineligible occupation

Farmer Self-Employed Pathway

This pathway targets individuals with experience managing agricultural operations. It is administered in coordination with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Key Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate:

• Current farm management experience
• Skills and training suitable for agricultural operations in Alberta
• A viable farm business plan
• Written confirmation of financing from a Canadian financial institution
• Minimum investment equity of CAD 500,000

Overseas Graduate Entrepreneur Pathway

This pathway is for international graduates from Alberta institutions who plan to establish or purchase a business in the province.

Applicants must operate the business for at least one year before becoming eligible for nomination.

Application Process

Step 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)

Eligible applicants submit an EOI, which is scored and ranked.

Step 2: Business Application Submission

Selected candidates submit a business application within three months, along with a non-refundable application fee.

Step 3: Business Assessment

Approved applicants receive a Business Performance Agreement (BPA) that must be signed and returned within 14 days.

Step 4: Business Establishment

Applicants must have operated the business in Alberta for at least 1 year and must own at least 34 per cent of the enterprise.

Step 5: Nomination and PR Application

After meeting all performance requirements, applicants receive provincial nomination and may apply for permanent residence through IRCC.

Alberta PNP Draws and Occupations

Alberta conducts periodic draws from the Express Entry pool. Results are typically published within 30 days of the draw date.

Occupations commonly represented across Alberta include roles in management, health services, finance, education, trades, transportation, manufacturing, and technical fields.
